When I first started learning to draw birds, I thought “real” artists only worked freehand. No tools, no shortcuts — just pure observation and skill.

That wasn’t me.

I’d spend hours on a drawing, feel pretty good about it, and then look again later: the bill was at some wild angle, the head too big, or the feet looked like they’d been attached by a mad scientist. I’d think, How could I have ever thought this was correct?

After months of frustration, I started experimenting with tools. Some artists dismiss them as cheating — but for me, each one was a teacher.
